Everything you need to know about lip rejuvenation

Published on Aug 29th, 2017 by Laurel Morton, MD

Lip rejuvenation treatmentPatients often come to the dermatologists at SkinCare Physicians to voice concerns about the appearance of their lips. Some individuals hope for fuller lips and others are noticing new lines and folds around the mouth as they age. Fortunately, we have safe and effective treatments to rejuvenate your lips. Here are answers to the questions that patients often pose about lip treatments.

What might be done to softly plump the lips?

For patients who are hoping to give their lips a softer, fuller appearance, a popular treatment is the injection of hyaluronic acid fillers. This is a quick procedure that provides results lasting up to 12 months. Products such as Juvederm Ultra, Volbella and Restylane are fillers that help to plump the lips and are slowly broken down by the body’s own enzymes over many months. The latest filler materials enable skilled physicians to provide a natural, but meaningful improvement.

What about improving the appearance of upper and lower lip lines?

Newer generations of fillers, which are delicate and soft such as Belotero, Restylane Silk and Volbella, have been designed with the goal of improving very fine lines like those seen around the mouth. Even wrinkles, which have been present for years can be greatly improved with hyaluronic acid fillers. When experienced dermatologists combine these fillers with conservative use of Botox or Dysport treatment, these results can last even longer. The improvements seen with these safe treatments can last from 6 to12 months.

What about smoothing smile lines and marionette lines?

Smile lines or nasolabial folds (seen between the nose and lips) and marionette lines (between the lips and chin) can also be bothersome for patients. Marionette lines especially, as they don’t just make people look older, but can cause the face to look unhappy. A new filler that is especially superb for treating these areas is Vollure, which creates a soft and smooth appearance of the skin. Restylane, Juvederm Ultra and Juvederm Ultra Plus are other fillers that can be chosen to customize each patient’s treatment.

What if I want to improve the appearance of upper lip lines with longer lasting results?

Many patients choose to complement the use of hyaluronic acid fillers with procedures designed to rebuild collagen and fill in lip lines from the bottom up. There are several categories of treatment options which are often combined. Radiofrequency treatments with the Pelleve device help the skin’s collagen to become tighter. Furthermore, gentle resurfacing treatments with microneedling or fractionated lasers also create a wound-healing response that stimulates new collagen growth. A series of 2 to 4 treatments can provide longer lasting improvement of fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth.

What topical treatments are available for lip lines?

Sunscreen

Skin around the mouth receives a great deal of UV light from sun exposure and is prone to sunburn. Applying sunscreen daily is always an important way to combat the aging process and slow the UV damage that contributes to wrinkles and fine lines. EltaMD UV Lip Balm Broad-Spectrum SPF 31 is ideal for sensitive areas around the lips.

Retinol/retinoid creams

For individuals who are hoping to prevent the progression of fines lines and even improve them, retinol/retinoid creams are very useful. These include prescriptions such as tretinoin and over-the-counter products such as Skinbetter Science’s AlphaRet Overnight Cream.

Hyaluronic acid lotions

Topical hyaluronic acid serums and gels can also help smooth lip lines and include products such as SkinMedica’s HA5 Smooth and Plump Lip System and Skinbetter Science’s Interfuse Intensive Treatment LINES.

If the appearance of your lips or the skin around your lips is starting to bother you, don’t wait; schedule a consultation with one of the cosmetic dermatologists at SkinCare Physicians to learn more about your treatment options.

I have read about different procedures your staff perform at your practice.
