If I could only do one cosmetic procedure, what would it be?

Published on Aug 11th, 2026 by Jeffrey Dover, MD

Fraxel deviceAt SkinCare Physicians, we offer a wide range of cosmetic treatments, from Botox and fillers to non-surgical skin tightening, treatment for sun-induced brown spots and facial redness, laser hair removal and body contouring. Each treatment offers distinct benefits, depending on your skin goals.

But if I, Dr. Dover, could only do one procedure, my choice would be Fraxel, fractional laser skin resurfacing. Here is why.

Standing the test of time and versatile

Originally developed at Mass General Hospital in the early 2000’s, Fraxel revolutionized our ability to rejuvenate and treat aging skin. It addresses many of the most common signs of skin aging, improving tone, texture, pigmentation and fine wrinkles. Whether you’re in your late 20’s or early 30’s and want to maintain healthy, youthful-looking skin, or you’re a bit older and notice the first sign of skin aging, or you’re in your 60’s, 70’s or beyond and want your skin to look more like it did back in your 30’s and 40’s, Fraxel can help your skin look brighter, smoother and healthier.

Beyond cosmetic benefits: Healthier skin

One of the most recent exciting findings is that Fraxel may do more than improve appearance. Recent research has shown that one single Fraxel can reduce the risk of certain skin cancers by as much as 50%, making it a treatment with both cosmetic and skin health benefits.

A Fraxel treatment for each skin goal

There are a variety of Fraxel procedures available to meet specific skin needs. Several have been developed and perfected at SkinCare Physicians, including:

  • Fraxel 1927 for improving uneven color and tone.
  • Fraxel 1550 for textural improvement in fine wrinkles and scars, including surgical, traumatic and acne scars.
  • Fraxel Quick Recovery, known as FQR, for patients who want the benefits of Fraxel with less downtime.

A safe cosmetic procedure

Fraxel is safe and effective. It is performed in our office with just topical local anesthesia. Most patients experience pain for about one hour after the procedure. Side effects are similar to a sunburn. Temporary redness and swelling are expected, easily managed, and last from one to four days depending on the Fraxel treatment selected.

Every cosmetic procedure has its strengths. Treatments such as Botox, fillers, skin tightening, lasers for brown spots and facial redness, and body contouring can produce outstanding results when used appropriately, helping us look better and younger. But if I had to choose just one procedure, my answer would be Fraxel every time, because of its versatility, effectiveness, and ability to improve both the appearance and overall health of the aging skin.
