Exciting new microneedling skin treatment at SkinCare Physicians

Published on Jul 11th, 2016 by Thomas Rohrer, MD

Woman treated with microneedlingDoesn’t everyone want their skin to look better without having to go through much “down time?” Wouldn’t it be ideal to have a treatment that can provide wrinkle and scar reduction at the same time? Well, SkinCare Physicians near Boston is excited to offer a new microneedling procedure that can improve the texture of your skin and reduce the appearance of some superficial types of scars.

How does microneedling work

The premise of microneedling (also known as collagen induction therapy) is that multiple tiny needles puncture the skin to create microscopic injuries just under the surface. The body repairs these small wounds by producing more collagen and elastin which in turn improves the texture and quality of the skin.

Areas and skin types best for a microneedling treatment

  • It is safe for all skin types.
  • It is a favorite for treating wrinkles around the lips, but can be used virtually anywhere on the body.

Why patients love microneedling

  • It does not hurt much at all.
  • It has very little down time. Most patients experience only a day or so of redness in the treatment area. Although they probably wouldn’t want to have any major events planned, they are fine to go about their daily activities within a day or so after the treatment.
  • It is quick. A microneedling treatment takes minutes. While patients do see some improvement with a single treatment, a series of 3 to 4 procedures spaced a month or so apart is recommended to attain even better results in the texture of the skin.
  • It offers long lasting results as there is no product placed in the skin that will degrade over time. The improvement comes from the creation of the patient’s own new collagen and elastin. The procedure can be combined with fillers and Botox to further improve results – a good example would be the treatment of fine lines around the mouth.

    Good morning,
I’m a patient of Dr Dover and I’m interested in Microneedling. Do you combine it with RF?

    • Dr. Jeffrey Dover says:

A very good question to a confusing topic. There is Microneedling and RF Microneedling.
Microneedling uses an instrument with a group of fine needles that repeatedly penetrate the skin to improve mild textural imperfections and brighten it.
RF Microneedling uses a group of needles to deliver radiofrequency (RF). The benefit of this technique is the RF itself, not the needles. RF Microneedling helps skin texture improving fine lines and wrinkles, acne scarring, and also tightens lax facial skin.
Two different technologies with similar names. Hence the confusion.
