There is exciting news for people living with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis: The recent approval of the daily pill Icotyde.
The FDA approved Icotyde (icotrokinra) provides a new treatment option that combines convenience, effectiveness, and an excellent safety profile for adults and adolescents aged 12 years and older.
Convenience: One of the most notable strengths of Icotyde is that it is a once-daily oral medication. For many patients, taking a pill may feel more approachable and convenient than receiving injections. This may be especially important for adolescents and others who are uncomfortable with needles, believes Dr. Sobell, a psoriasis expert.
Excellent safety profile: Icotyde has also demonstrated an impressive safety profile in clinical trials. The rate of side effects was comparable to placebo, providing reassurance for patients and healthcare providers considering long-term treatment.
Efficacy: Just as important, Icotyde works well. Clinical trial results showed that approximately seven out of ten patients achieved clear or almost clear skin after 16 weeks of treatment. By week 24, one out of every two patients achieved completely clear skin, highlighting the medication’s ability to deliver meaningful improvement for many individuals living with psoriasis.
Psoriasis occurs when the immune system mistakenly speeds up the growth of skin cells, leading to thick, scaly, and inflamed patches of skin. Icotyde works by blocking a specific immune system signal called IL-23, which plays a key role in causing psoriasis.
Physicians at the Psoriasis Treatment Center at SkinCare Physicians participated in the clinical research that helped evaluate Icotyde, giving our team firsthand experience with this important new therapy. Our providers are skilled in assessing all severities of psoriasis and can discuss in detail whether Icotyde may be an appropriate treatment option for you.
