Spot, Spot, Go Away!

Published on Mar 14th, 2013 by Kenneth Arndt, MD

Tired of looking at those age spots, liver spots, freckles? Want to get rid of those bothersome areas of pigmentation, a dark birthmark, or the odd tattoo?

Well, you can actually do that quite well nowadays!

“Bleaching creams” have long been around and have been used for centuries in one form or another. But, although some of them may be of some benefit, their effects even when good are usually far less than optimal.

Over the past couple of decades, technological insights and innovations have led to the development of a variety of laser and light based sources that are very effective in altering pigmented lesions. With one treatment, or a series of treatments, small or large areas of concern can be induced to radically diminish or go away.

There are several types of energy devices that may be used:

  • Some are lasers which deliver very short bursts of light (millionth or trillionth of a second) such as the GentleLase, GentleYag, LightSheer, RevLite, and the new and revolutionary Picosure.
  • Some are sources of intense broad band light delivered in bursts of thousands of a second, such as the Icon Starlux.
  • Some are resurfacing lasers which not only treat spots of pigmentation, but smooth out skin texture at the same time, such as the Fraxel re:store 1550nm or 1927nm, or Icon 1540nm.

Individual lesions or larger areas such as the entire face, chest or hands can be treated with the appropriate device. They all may sting a bit, but there is little or no “downtime”.

As you can see, it’s pretty straightforward to rid yourself of your skin spots now. With the numerous laser/light devices available to them, SkinCare Physicians’ dermatologists have the ability to treat any type of pigmentation problem. SkinCare Physicians has long been interested in the treatment of pigmented lesions and our Clinical Research unit has carried key research underlying the development and use of these instruments. Our latest clinical trial in this area helped to secure FDA approval for the PicoSure 755nm alexandrite laser for tattoo removal.

So bring your spots in, and we’ll get rid of them for you! Reserve a consultation online with one of Skincare Physicians’ dermatologists in Boston or call 1-617-731-6100.
